Not All Acne Problems Are Created Equal

acne problems are not created equally

Women have been tackling the issue of acne since the medieval times. It was commonly believed that only teenagers suffered from acne but as it turns out, 50% of women in their 20s and 30s have this problem. So why does acne continue to be a problem even at this new age? Well, the proper answer to this question is that acne problems are prevalent because people do not understand that facial spots come in different categories. Without proper knowledge of your acne problem you cannot tackle the problem effectively. So what are these acne categories?

Whiteheads

Majority of people think whiteheads are bumps with white pussy heads. This is incorrect. Whiteheads are small bumps that have no head and they sit right under the skin. These bumps form as a result of clogged spores which with time they can become inflamed. Whiteheads are common to women of all ages since they come along with hormonal changes like pregnancy, puberty, menstruation and even menopause.

Pustules

Pustules are pimples with white pussy heads. This is what most people confuse as whiteheads. People suffering from pustules just can’t seem to resist the temptation to pick and pop them. When you pop a pustule, two things happen. One, when you squeeze the area around the spot, you push some of the bacteria deeper into the skin which causes inflammation and prolongs healing of the spot. Chances of new spots forming in the same area increase. Two, when you pop a pustule the top later of the skin breaks which leaves the skin open and eventually forms a scar.

Blackheads

Blackheads are more common than any other spots and everyone at one point suffers from these. Blackheads just like whiteheads come about from clogged pores caused by excessive secretion of sebum. When sebum and keratin get clogged in the pores, they oxidize and turn black when they get exposed to the air. Blackheads mostly appear on the nose since the nose has a higher concentration of oil glands.

Cystic Acne

Unlike the other categories of acne, cystic acne is by far the most complicated acne to treat. The reason why this type of acne is severe is because the infection is not just skin deep but it extends further deeper into skin’s layers. These spots are tender but at the same time they are very painful. If you pop cystic acnes, you cause very serious damage to your skin and they can take days or even weeks before they finally heal. Cystic acne is caused by excessive production of androgens which are responsible for the secretion of sebum. The pores become severely clogged which lead to cystic acne.

Papules

Papules are small in size and hard to touch. Unlike cystic acne, they are not painful but they appear red and inflamed. They have the same characteristics of pustules only that they are not filled with yellow or white pus.
